The story of Ron Abuelo can be traced back to 1908, when Don José Varela created the first sugar mill in the young Republic of Panama. They have since developed a highly-regarded reputation for their aged rums, aided by their long history. Their Añejo bottling hits all the right notes, with savory cedar and worn leather notes opening into spiced cake, toasted coconut, and butterscotch. The savor on the nose carries onto the palate, where it is cushioned by flavors of crème brûlée, toasted clove, and brown sugar. This is a fantastic value for a dark rum that is just as at-home neat with a slight chill as it is in any classic dark rum cocktail (think Mai Tai, Planter's Punch, or Dark & Stormy).
