If Roku is not Suntory's inaugural gin, then it is the result of over a century of refinement. Its 14 botanicals are distilled separately, with the entire distillation tailored to each particular ingredient. By example, cherry blossoms undergo vacuum distillation in stainless pot stills, while yuzu is distilled in copper pot stills. 6 of the botanicals are emblematic of Japan's seasons: sakura leaf and sakura flower for spring, sencha tea and gyokuro tea for summer, sansho pepper for autumn and yuzu peel for winter. Traditional gin botanicals such as juniper, orange peel, lemon peel, coriander and cinnamon also make an appearance. Savor is prominent, with aromas of green tea leaf, warming herbs, and dried citrus peels lifted by a hint of spring flowers. The palate is smooth, with savory herbs and spices brightened by detectable notes of yuzu. A faint peppery note brings complexity to the finish. Makes for a great Negroni, a more balanced Gimlet, or a beautiful Martini.
